Older Adult Therapy
It's called the "Golden Years", but often the experience is anything but that for those entering this stage of life. Seniors can be faced with many challenges such as health issues, relationship changes, grief and loss, financial problems, and loss of independence. This final transitional period can be difficult to navigate alone and depression is common among older people. Many of those from the “Greatest Generation” have long viewed therapy as something only used by crazy people. Fortunately this stigma is now less prevalent and in fact, many older adults recognize therapy can be a useful tool which can increase overall satisfaction and happiness in life.
Therapy can help put a lifetime in perspective, temper lingering regrets and disappointments and also reflect on well earned successes. Seniors generally have a high satisfaction rate in therapy because they are more serious about the work, realize that time is limited and are less tolerant of wasted time. Therapy aims to assist older adults accept their current situation and focus on what is in their control and how to go forward. This in turn can open up new possibilities and ways of viewing the current situation and promote a healthier and happier outlook for the future. |
